Growing in Faith

The Work You Don’t Always See

He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season.” — Psalm 1:3

Faith rarely grows the way we expect.

Many of us imagine spiritual growth as something dramatic—big breakthroughs, powerful moments, or sudden clarity where everything falls into place. And sometimes God does move that way. But more often, faith grows quietly, slowly, and steadily over time.

Much like a tree.

A healthy tree does not grow overnight. It sends its roots deeper into the soil long before anyone notices new branches or fruit. The real work of growth happens beneath the surface where no one can see it.

Faith works the same way.

There are seasons in our lives where it feels like nothing is changing. Our prayers seem ordinary. Our routines feel repetitive. We read Scripture, go to church, pray, and try to live faithfully—but it doesn’t always feel dramatic or exciting.

Yet those quiet seasons are often where the deepest growth is happening.

God is strengthening our roots.

The Hidden Work of Faith

One of the challenges of faith is that we often measure growth by what is visible.

We look for results, clarity, and progress we can easily recognize. But spiritual growth is not always immediately visible. God often does His most important work in places we cannot see yet.

Think about how seeds grow.

When a seed is planted, nothing appears above the ground at first. For a while, it can look like nothing is happening at all. But beneath the surface, the seed is breaking open, sending roots into the soil, and preparing for the growth that will eventually appear.

Faith often develops in the same hidden way.

God strengthens our trust during seasons of waiting.
He deepens our understanding through Scripture we return to again and again.
He builds patience through circumstances that stretch us.

The growth may not feel dramatic in the moment, but over time it shapes who we are becoming.

Faith Grows Through Daily Connection

Jesus often spoke about abiding—remaining connected to Him.

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself.” — John 15:4

Branches don’t produce fruit by striving harder. They produce fruit by staying connected to the vine that gives them life.

Our faith grows the same way. Growth doesn’t come from trying to manufacture spiritual strength on our own. It comes from staying connected to Christ day after day. Prayer, Scripture, worship, and quiet moments with God keep our hearts rooted in Him.

Sometimes these practices feel small or ordinary. But they are the very places where faith grows.

Every time we open God’s Word, we allow truth to shape our thinking. Every prayer reminds our hearts where our help comes from. Every step of obedience strengthens our trust in God.

Faith grows through consistency.

Seasons That Strengthen Faith

Not every season of life feels like growth.

There are seasons when life feels uncertain, heavy, or confusing. We may wonder where God is working or why things are taking so long to change.

But Scripture reminds us that God often uses difficult seasons to strengthen faith.

Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2–3

Trials do not weaken faith when we bring them to God. Instead, they deepen our dependence on Him.

When circumstances stretch us beyond our own strength, we begin learning to trust God in new ways. We discover that He is faithful not only in moments of celebration but also in moments of uncertainty.

Sometimes the strongest faith grows in the hardest soil.

Faith Produces Fruit in Its Time

One of the most encouraging promises in Scripture is that growth eventually produces fruit.

Psalm 1 describes the faithful person as a tree planted by streams of water that “yields its fruit in season.”

Notice the phrase in season.

Fruit does not appear all at once. It grows over time as the tree continues receiving water and nourishment. In the same way, spiritual fruit—love, patience, wisdom, peace—develops gradually as we remain rooted in God.

You may not always notice the change happening in yourself. But over time, the people around you begin to see it.

Your reactions become calmer.
Your perspective becomes steadier.
Your hope becomes stronger.

The quiet work of faith begins showing itself through the way you live.

Keep Walking, Even When Growth Feels Slow

If your faith feels small right now, that doesn’t mean it isn’t growing.

Some seasons are about visible breakthroughs. Other seasons are about strengthening the roots that will sustain future growth.

God is patient with our process.

He is not rushing your journey or comparing your growth to someone else’s. He is faithfully working within you, shaping your heart and building a faith that will endure through every season of life.

The invitation is simple: stay connected to Him.

Keep praying.
Keep opening His Word.
Keep taking small steps of obedience.

Even when the growth is hidden, God is still at work.

And just like a tree planted beside flowing streams, your faith will continue to grow—rooted, steady, and alive.
